On July 11, 2025, India officially notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) that in response to the US's decision to raise steel and aluminum import tariffs from 25% to 50% in June, India had decided to increase the coverage amount of retaliatory tariffs against the US from the previous $1.9 billion to $3.8 billion, as a reciprocal countermeasure to the US's further tariff increases. Currently, India-US trade negotiations have reached an impasse, with both sides failing to reach an agreement on a new round of trade agreements. The Indian delegation is expected to travel to the US next week to continue consultations, with the deadline for renewed negotiations set before August 1, when the reciprocal tariffs take effect.
